A fireproof safe is slightly different from a normal safe. While you may think that any safe is going to keep your papers safe, the heat of the safe actually has something to do with whether or not the documents within will actually survive. If they get too hot they'll ignite, and if you have a metal safe then your documents are sure to get hot when a fire breaks out. Chances are you do have a metal safe so it's very important to know what sort of safe to get.
A fireproof safe has a special function. Its actual function is to release moisture when it gets above a certain temperature and therefore keeps the safe from rising above a certain temperature. This keeps the documents within from igniting and therefore you will be perfectly safe. There are a few other factors that you need to consider when buying a fireproof safe however, and they are the following:
How long do you need your documents to be protected from fire? Different fire proof safes have different ratings and different amounts of time that they will actually be able to keep your documents safe. How do you know what type you need? It really depends on how hard your safe is to get to. If you somehow plan to carry your safe out of the building then it shouldn't be a problem, but chances are you aren't going to be able to do that. If you believe your safe is on a floor of the building that can burn for a very long time, then you'll want to be sure to get a safe that can last for a very long time. In any case you should probably grab one that will last the longest, but that really depends on your budget.
What exactly are you trying to protect? If you are protecting papers then it would be best to get one that is rated for paper. This is just about any sort of fireproof safe so it's not going to be a big deal.
If you are trying to protect media such as CDs, DVDs, or even hard drives, then you want to make sure that you get a fire proof safe that is rated for media storage and protection. There is quite a difference and you'll be glad that you opted for this type of safe when you run into a fire and you're trying to store media.
The one that you get really depends on your preferences and what you're storing. If you can afford it then you should always go with the best type of safe possible because you never know what might happen. Remember that money should not really be an object when you are buying a safe of this type because you need to be as protected as you possibly can be. Get the best safe and make sure that you're as protected as you possibly can be. If you do it right, you should never lose any documents at all!
