It wasn't all that long ago that the Internet was a tiny place that did not have many people that were playing in the same areas. Times have really changed, and it is difficult for anybody to start a new website that does not have at least a little bit of competition that it is going up against. Some of this competition will be fierce and may have been around for quite some time, accumulating listings and rankings in the search engines that are difficult for you to obtain yourself. That is, of course, unless you follow in their footsteps.

One of the best things that you can do for your new online business is to take a long and hard look at your competition in order to find out exactly what it is that they are doing. Some people may consider this spying, and to tell you the truth, it is leaning in that direction. The search engines that have these websites listed are also a source of great information for those of you who are in competition with them. Not only will you be able to find all of the webpages that are listed in the search engines on those websites, you will also be able to get other information, such as where the links to the website are coming from.

This can be done manually, or you can buy software, such as SEO Elite that will compile the information for you. The Yahoo search engines still gives accurate details as far as the links that are coming into any domain, and it can be utilized by typing the following into the search engine itself, link:domain.com. Analyzing where these different links are coming from can often give you some direction for you to take in your own linking process. If somebody thought enough of their website in order to give them links, they may be willing to do the same for you.

Another thing for you to look at is the structure of your competition's website. Although it is always a good idea for you to constantly be testing different methods of increasing the amount of sales that you're getting, you can often find a lot of interesting information by simply looking at the way they have their website set up. This is especially the case if they are particularly Internet savvy, as they will no doubt be testing different methods of increasing their sales as well.

It is always a good idea for you to be an individual and you certainly should never outright copy any other website as this would be a violation of copyright laws. They say, however, that imitation is the greatest form of flattery so make sure that you are flattering your competition by taking the best parts of their hard work and applying it to your own website, using your own unique flair in the process.

If you are just starting out with internet marketing it's a good idea to read some books first.
